Hi all,
After taking numerous classes and sitting on panels, over the years, I've found that I feel most comfortable around two particular Enneagram types - 9 and 5. I am an enneagram 9 and an Empath and took a few tests and came out dead on for INFJ. I was wondering if anyone else saw a connection between your enneagram type and being an Empath.
The biggest challenges I have are with enneagram 8 and 3 (Both intense but an 8 is physically/energetically loud and 3's can be type A loud)
The 5's are intellectual, quieter and not focused so much on emotion so for an INFJ/empath we don't pick up as much free floating emotionally-charged vibes from them.
9's are usually too busy picking up everyone's stuff and repressing or creating calm (even if they are a basket case inside) that one usually feels calm around them.
p.s. I also posted this on the INFJ site.

Re: Enneagram and Empath
Wed, February 11, 2009 - 1:10 PMHello David,
The enneagram has been around for ages and used for many things. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enne...rsonality, youtube, internet sites etc. have some great information. In more recent times it has been used as a way to understand personalities.
There are books out about the crossovers between Myers-Briggs and the Enneagram. And many people who know their Enneagram type also know their Myers-Briggs type.
It doesn't attempt to box in ones TRUE nature but it does assist in giving us a snapshot of personalities. Personalities being the process by which we filter the world in and out of our body/minds. I find learning about all these different things (Ayurveda, Myers-Briggs, Enneagram) gives me a deeper appreciation and understanding of myself and my clients, as long as I hold all philosophies a bit gently.
It’s always a good idea to read different interpretations/take different tests because each was created by someone from their particular perspective/type which may not resonate with you.
It is fascinating to me to sit through seminars with panels of people who know there types and see the vast differences in these groups - the 8s physical intensity (you move you chairs back a bit, lol) then the 5s with their quiet intellectual ways (you move your chairs forward to hear them).
Like many systems each of us contains all the types but we have a particular proclivity to one. To finally feel like we resonate with something gives us a feeling of belonging and once we feel grounded in that we can move forward and expand past it. We stay who we are but simply expand and open more to understanding and being more.
I am relatively new to Myers-Briggs (but enjoying learning more about myself from the INFJ perspective). Is it pretty much the same end goal as what I’ve outlined here for the Enneagram? -

"Carl Jung (1875–1961), an INFP type, an early colleague of Sigmund Freud, pioneered the understanding of human personality and function through intuition and insight. He was the inspiration for personality type assessments pioneered by Isabel Myers and Katherine Briggs".

Thu, February 12, 2009 - 4:14 AMI was given a book on this many years ago, it seemed good. I think I was closest to a 5, which in that book said 'creative personality'
Havent though about it much lately tho.

Sat, February 14, 2009 - 9:40 AMDesertBlue thank you for that link it was really interesting. I didn't realize how close the INFP was to the INFJ - so similar but with their own unique flavor. I thought I would see 4s, 9s and 2s as empaths. They all seem to be sensitive in similar ways. 2s often saying yes to people because they often tie their feeling of success/happiness to seeing others successful. 4's feeling comfortable in delving into the deepest emotions can relate to others so well (especially when others are in crisis) and they pull up such creativity. I've seen panels of 4s and when balanced they are so very loving and with a very strong desire to be unique and authentic.
Christie - The fact that you showed up as a 5 was a bit of a surprise but maybe with a very strong 4 wing? The 5s are the more mental types of the enneagram and I love being around them because they have so much information but don't spend a lot of their attention particles on emotions (excellent counterpart to most empaths). Indeed, emotions often confuse them but they are wonderful in a crisis because they are so cool headed.
